C'est la rencontre avec le cin\u00E9aste fran\u00E7ais Jean Renoir, lors du tournage en Inde du film Le Fleuve et le visionnage du film italien n\u00E9o-r\u00E9aliste Le Voleur de bicyclette, lors d'un voyage \u00E0 Londres, qui le d\u00E9cident \u00E0 se lancer dans la r\u00E9alisation cin\u00E9matographique, alors qu'il exerce le m\u00E9tier d'illustrateur dans une maison d'\u00E9dition.
