Film byl natočen podle stejnojmenné novely řeckého spisovatele Nikose Kazantzakise a vychází ze skutečné události. Režisérem filmu byl Kyperský Řek Michalis Kakojannis, hudbu složil Mikis Theodorakis. Film ve vtipném podání charakterizuje typickou řeckou povahu, kterou ztělesňuje právě hlavní postava snímku Alexis Zorbas. Film byl v roce 1965 oceněn třemi Oscary: za vedlejší ženskou roli, Oscar za nejlepší kameru (Walter Lassally) a za výpravu (Vassilis Photopoulos). (cs)

Είναι βασισμένη στο βιβλίο του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη Βίος και πολιτεία του Αλέξη Ζορμπά. Η ταινία απέσπασε τρία βραβεία Όσκαρ το 1964, με σημαντικότερο το Όσκαρ β' γυναικείου ρόλου για την ερμηνεία της Λίλα Κέντροβα, στο ρόλο της Μαντάμ Ορντάνς. Η μουσική της ταινίας, την οποία έγραψε ο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης, έγινε παγκοσμίως γνωστή ως συρτάκι. Οι εξωτερικές σκηνές της ταινίας γυρίστηκαν στην Κρήτη. (el)
