Premier long métrage du cinéaste, il met en scène l'actrice française Catherine Deneuve, aux côtés de David Bowie et de Susan Sarandon. Le film, présenté au festival de Cannes, ne sera pas un succès lors de sa sortie en salles en France quelques jours plus tard, mais devient un film culte au fil des ans.
