- Tamerlano il Grande (Tamburlaine the Great) è una tragedia di Christopher Marlowe in due parti, scritta nel 1587 o 1588. Basata sulla vita di Tamerlano, l'opera ha segnato un punto di grande rilievo nella storia del teatro elisabettiano, in quanto sia la trama che la lingua sono più sviluppate che nelle opere teatrali dei drammaturghi Tudor precedenti. In particolare, l'uso articolato della lingua, la complessità intellettuale ed il ruolo chiave nell'utilizzo del pentametro giambico a teatro hanno reso la tragedia uno dei primi grandi risultati del teatro elisabettiano e, insieme alla Tragedia spagnola di Thomas Kyd, è stato uno dei primi grandi successi di pubblico del teatro inglese. Es basiert lose auf dem Leben des zentralasiatischen Militärführers Timur (Temür ibn Taraghai Barlas, 1336–1405). Als das Drama 1587 oder 1588 niedergeschrieben wurde, galt es als Meilenstein der englischen Literatur des Elisabethanischen Zeitalters; es markiert eine Abkehr von der plumpen Sprache und den simplen Handlungen in den Stücken früherer Dramatiker hin zu einem neuen Interesse an frischer und lebendiger Sprache, herausragendem Handlungsgeschehen und intellektueller Komplexität. Certains commentateurs y voient une manifestation d'athéisme et une critique du christianisme alors que d'autres insistent sur la veine anti-musulmane du texte, illustrée par exemple par une scène où l'on brûle le Coran. - Tamburlaine the Great is a play in two parts by Christopher Marlowe. It is loosely based on the life of the Central Asian emperor Timur (Tamerlane/Timur the Lame, d. 1405). Written in 1587 or 1588, the play is a milestone in Elizabethan public drama; it marks a turning away from the clumsy language and loose plotting of the earlier Tudor dramatists, and a new interest in fresh and vivid language, memorable action, and intellectual complexity. Along with Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, it may be considered the first popular success of London's public stage. (en)
