Ronnie Free (born Ronald Guy Free on January 15, 1936, in Charleston, South Carolina) is an American jazz drummer. His recording credits date back to the 1950s and he has collaborated with many notable jazz musicians including pianists Mose Allison, Oscar Pettiford, Sonny Clark, and bandleader Woody Herman.The story of Ronnie Free's time in New York is told in an episode of NPR's "The Jazz Loft" series and as a resident of the loft Free functioned as the "house drummer" for many of the jam sessions that occurred there.

  • Ronald Guy „Ronnie“ Free (* 15. Januar 1936 in Charleston, South Carolina) ist ein US-amerikanischer Jazz-Schlagzeuger. Free erhielt Unterricht bei seinem Vater (einem Alkoholiker, der ihn zu ständigem Üben zwang, auch unter Schlägen) und verließ 1952 die Schule um auf Tour mit dem Komiker-Trio Tommy Weeks and his Merry Madcaps zu gehen, von denen er bald in ein Showorchester aus Tampa in Florida wechselte. Durch Platten von Max Roach angeregt wandte er sich um 1955 dem Jazz zu. Er spielte 1956 in New York City in der Off-Broadway Produktion Shoestring Revue, wo ihn Oscar Pettiford in einem Solo hörte und ihn einlud mit ihm zu spielen.
