Peter of Rates (Portuguese: Pedro de Rates), also known in English as Peter of Braga, is traditionally considered to be the first bishop of Braga between the years AD 45 and 60. Tradition says he was ordered to preach the Christian faith by James the Great, and that Peter of Rates was martyred while attempting to convert the locals to the Christian faith in northern Portugal. The ancient Breviary of Braga (Breviarium Bracarense) and the Breviary of Evora hold that Peter of Rates was a disciple of James and preached at Braga. However, the Bollandists say that this claim is "purely traditional."

Dort sei er dann um das Jahr 60 wegen (de) San Pietro di Rates, detto anche san Pietro di Braga (Portogallo, ... – Portogallo, 60 circa), è stato un vescovo portoghese. Egli è tradizionalmente considerato il primo vescovo di Braga tra gli anni 45 e 60. La tradizione vuole che egli sia stato ordinato vescovo per diffondere il cristianesimo da san Giacomo il Maggiore e che abbia subito il martirio mentre operava conversioni al cristianesimo nel nord del Portogallo. San Pietro di Rates viene celebrato il 26 aprile. (it)
