Die Pastorale kann eine selbständige Komposition sein, tritt aber auch als Teil einer Komposition mit mehreren Sätzen auf. Sie steht meist in einem Dreiertakt (z. B. 12/8-Takt) und in Dur, der Rhythmus erinnert häufig an eine Siciliana. Typisch ist ein mäßiges bis ruhiges Tempo und vor allem ein lieblich-wiegender, aber heiterer Charakter; zuweilen kommen auch Stücke in einem fröhlichen Tempo vor. Ya no se usan óperas pastorales, porque ya no es fácil en el día encontrar compositores que sepan hallar conceptos musicales, propios de la sencillez que requieren y los hay que brillarán más en óperas grandes. Scarlatti wrote some examples in his keyboard sonatas, and many other composers in the transition between the baroque and classical eras, particularly French (Marc-Antoine Charpentier), used this technique. Rossini famously included a Pastorale section in his William Tell Overture. The Italian pastorale Tu scendi dalle stelle, sometimes called "Carol of the Bagpipers" (Canzone d'i zampognari), is a widely popular Christmas carol by St. Alfonso Liguori, and Pietro Yon's Gesù bambino is another. In de Renaissance ontwikkelde zich in Italië een toneelvorm die het herdersleven idealiseerde en zijn stof aan de klassieke literatuur ontleende. Het toneel werd vaak begeleid met muziek die dit pastorale (herderlijke) karakter onderstreepte, en daaraan ook haar naam ontleende. De vorm werd in Frankrijk overgenomen. Daarna vond het genre veel navolging.
* Kerstmuziek werd in deze sfeer geschreven, en heette dan Hirtenmusik (Duits voor "herdersmuziek").
* Händel nam een Pastorale op in zijn Messiah. Het is een instrumentaal fragment in het oratorium.
* Bachs Vierde Brandenburgs Concert is met zijn fluitmuziek een ander voorbeeld.
* Beethoven schreef met zijn Zesde Symfonie een sterk programmatische symfonie, die dan ook de Pastorale heet.
* De tweede symfonie van Brahms heeft eveneens die bijnaam.
* Van Schubert is een Herdersmelodie en een Herderskoor (uit Rosamunde).
