Leon James was a prominent American Lindy Hop and jazz dancer. A performer during the 1930s and 1940s with the Harlem-based Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, he and his partner Willa Mae Ricker were featured in a photo essay in the August 23, 1943, issue of Life magazine, demonstrating air steps. In 1935, James and won the . Due to poor eyesight, James was not drafted during World War II. During the 1950s and 1960s, James partnered with Al Minns to promote the dances they helped to pioneer, appearing at dance events, in short films, and on TV.

Proslavil se ve 30. a 40. letech 20. století vystupováním a účinkováním ve filmech s harlemskou taneční skupinou nebo partnerem Al Minnsem. Ve 30. letech také vystupoval v triu se "Shorty" George Snowdenem. Společně se svou partnerkou Willou Mae Rickerovou a spolu s tanečníky z Broadwaye Stanley Catronem a Kaye Popovou, kteří byli na titulní straně vydání, předvedli v čísle časopisu Life prvky lindy hopu. Ze zdravotních důvodů nebyl odveden do armády. V polovině 40. let cestoval, spolupracoval se skupinou a vystupoval spolu s Fletcherem Riversem ve dvojici Moke and Poke a Coke and Poke. Ze zdravotních důvodů spolupráci ukončil a Fletcher pokračoval s novým partnerem Haroldem Cromerem pod stejným jménem, což vedlo k záměnám staré a nové dvojice.
