Tisíce let před příchodem bílých osadníků v 50. letech 19. století bylo údolí osídleno původními obyvateli, kteří se živili sběrem a lovem (indiáni kmene Miwok). Na konci 19. století se údolí dostalo do povědomí lidí díky své přírodní kráse – často bylo srovnáváno s krásou Yosemitského údolí, ale také se o něm mluvilo jako o potenciálním zdroji závlahové a pitné vody. - Das Hetch Hetchy Valley ist das Tal des Oberlaufs des Tuolumne River auf der Westflanke der Sierra Nevada im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien. Es liegt im nordwestlichen Teil des Yosemite-Nationalparks, etwa 320 Kilometer östlich von San Francisco. Das Tal wurde wie das südlich benachbarte und bekanntere Yosemite-Tal des Merced River in den Eiszeitaltern von Gletschern als Trogtal geformt und war für tausende von Jahren von Ureinwohnern (Native Americans) bewohnt, bevor in den 1850er Jahren die ersten Europäer die Region erreichten. Im späten 19. Jahrhundert wurde das Tal wegen seiner natürlichen Schönheit oft mit dem Yosemite Valley verglichen – aber auch für die Entwicklung der Wasserversorgung interessant. (de)

The glacial Hetch Hetchy Valley lies in the northwestern part of Yosemite National Park and is drained by the Tuolumne River. For thousands of years before the arrival of settlers from the United States in the 1850s, the valley was inhabited by Native Americans who practiced subsistence hunting-gathering. During the late 19th century, the valley was renowned for its natural beauty – often compared to that of Yosemite Valley – but also targeted for the development of water supply for irrigation and municipal interests. The controversy over damming Hetch Hetchy became mired in the political issues of the day. The law authorizing the dam passed Congress on December 7, 1913. (en)
