The General Congregation is an assembly of the Jesuit representatives from all parts of the world, and serves as the highest authority in the Society of Jesus. A General Congregation (GC) is always summoned on the death or resignation of the administrative head of the order, called the Superior General or Father General, to choose his successor, and it may be called at other times if circumstances warrant. A smaller congregation of worldwide representatives meets every three years to discuss internal business and to decide the need for a general congregation.

Der Generalobere, der auch durch Beschluss der Versammlung abgesetzt werden kann, ist an deren Anordnungen gebunden. Está formado por todos los de la orden y dos delegados por cada provincia, elegidos en Congregación Provincial entre los que han profesado. Se reúne a la muerte del Padre General para elegir a su sucesor y también puede ser convocada para tomar decisiones de gran trascendencia, por el Papa, el Superior General a cargo o por la Congregación de Procuradores, una comisión elegida cada tres años por las provincias. El General, que también puede ser depuesto por decisión de la Congregación, está obligado a hacer cumplir sus decretos. (es)
