Seine engen Beziehungen zu seiner Heimatstadt Launceston boten ihm eine einzigartige, verwurzelte Sicht auf die Welt, und seine Seekriegserfahrung inspirierte seine frühen Gedichte wie in seiner ersten Gedichtsammlung Farewell Aggie Weston (1951).
