Amiram Harten (1946 – 1994) was an American/Israeli applied mathematician. Harten made fundamental contribution to the development of high-resolution schemes for the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations. Among other contributions, he developed the total variation diminishing scheme, which gives an oscillation free solution for flow with shocks. In 1990 Harten gave a talk on "Recent developments in shock-capturing schemes" at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto.

Harten wurde 1974 an der New York University bei Peter Lax promoviert (The Method of Artificial Compression for Shock and Contact Discontinuity Calculation). Er war Professor an der Universität Tel Aviv und außerdem an der University of California, Los Angeles. Seit 1976 war er auch jedes Jahr als Gastwissenschaftler am ICASE (Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering) des Langley Research Center der NASA. Er starb an einem Herzanfall.
